sheep and goats

Hi, I am semi retired and moving to my 60ac property near Biggenden Qld. I hope to run some dorper sheep and goats starting with around 10 of each to see how it goes. can I run them together in the same paddock or am I better to separate goats and sheep. Is there anyone here with local advise of problems I may have?
Regards Mick

Hi Mick, I have answered the question on the local Childers Community website, but will repeat it here so that other goat and sheep breeders can see the answer that I have given to you on the local website. Sheep and goats can be run together with no problem at all. However, you will need to put in goat proof boundary fences, as goats love to go adventuring, because to them, the grass is always greener in the next paddock- even if it isn't. You can use the same wormers on sheep and goats. Dingos and wild dogs are weaning pups at present in the area, so I would advise you to keep a good eye on your stock, as they are teaching their pups to hunt and will kill stock to hone the pups hunting techniques, even if the stock they kill, are not eaten. If you are going to start breeding goats, I would advise buying a Maremma pup to grow up with and guard your stock. they do a brilliant job. Maremma need to be fed once a day and handled frequently so that they are socialised with humans. Otherwise, they may not let you into the paddock.

Thanks Barb, I have just finished fencing off 30ac with hinge joint wire for this and will look into the Maremma.
