How to farm with sheep....

Hello everyone

We have been on our 28 acres on the NSW Central Coast for 2 years now, and have just now fixed the fencing on 2 of our paddocks, which will allow us to keep some livestock. We're wanting to put 5-6 sheep in the paddocks now to see how it goes. The only trouble is, we have no experience with Livestock or farming, and we're unsure what we need to do in order to keep the sheep. We're not looking at using the sheep to make money, it's more for a hobby.

I spoke to Local Land Services and managed to get really confused about our legal responsibilities. I had no idea about all the paperwork required by both ourselves and the vendor we're purchasing the sheep from.

Aside from wanting to know what we need to do as far as reporting our livestock, I'd also like to know from more experienced farmers about everyday care of sheep. We're looking to get Dorper sheep. What do we need to do to keep them happy and healthy?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Thanks, Mandy

The best way to keep your Dorper sheep healthy and happy is through ensuring good quality feed, keeping the animals' stress levels low and keeping them disease free. Healthy pastures definitely, plenty of space to graze and rotational grazing methods help to maintain an environment which ensures our animals are happy and healthy!!!

Hi,
It's been a while now. How are you going with your dorpers?
It's an impressive species. We have gone through the drought since last year but they are going strong.
Mine were thriving on dirt with Occasional hay bales and fortnightly stale breads since last September.
Went well in the market last month and we butchered 3 of them.
They were 8 months old and about 25-28kg on the hook.

hi please make sure your sheep have shelter from cold and heat and clean cool water, there are lots of cool ways to build shelters ect, that are easy and eco friendly. of course trees are always a winner. they will need their feet trimmed as well, ther are lots of organic solution to drench them for parasites, they can become very good pets , when treated well. enjoy
