Definition of a hobby farm

Hi there

We are looking to purchase our first farm, have a tree change and get into some breeding of horses, raising chickens etc. we expect to make a small income initially and as we wind down our city jobs over the next five years and increase the income from the farm.

In talking with lenders and insurance companies they all ask whether we are setting up a hobby farm or a farming business.

Can anyone tell me the technical definition?

Thanks

T

Anyone willing to help a young family get expereince farming/country life?

Hi there,

I have 3 kids ages 6,4 and 2 and we live in the city of melbourne. It has been a dream of mine to show them the country/farm lifestyle but have not been able to do this. We dont have any family or any friends that own farms.

I was hoping if anyone out there may have the heart/interest to allow me to bring my young family to visit and spend some time on your farm that would mean so much to me and my childrens life experiences. I really desperately want my kids to get to experience the amazing joy farming life can bring.

Starting a business in pest (rabbits, foxes) management

Hello, i am currently looking into starting a bussines in pest management specializing in farming and removal of rabbits and foxes etc. I was wondering if there is a worthwhile market out there and if farmers both small and large are willing to pay someone else to remove the pests for them.

Economical food for sheep/goats/alpacas

Hi, We are a small hobby farm with damaraxdorper sheep, miniature goats/ alpacas are we are wondering what would be the most cost efficient supplemantary feed we could feed to all 3?? All have reasonable grazing in their paddocks and at present we are feeding goats/alpacas lucerne hay and alpaca pellets/lucerne chaff and molasses . And the sheep are getting mixed grain and lucerne hay  ......but it is starting to cost us a fortune in feed and we are wondering what others feed their stock to help reduce feeding prices??  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Buying my first cattle

Hi all,

I am fairly new to this farming game, so go easy on me if I ask some basic farming questions. Not long ago I purchased a few acreas (big to me but a hobby farm to most) and am now looking to buy my first cattle. A local that I met down at the pub said that I need a PIC number if I want to buy cattle? Can someone tell my what is a PIC and if I need it, even though I only want to buy a few head of cattle? Any other farm advice would be appreciated.

Grazing pastures

I have a small farm of 170 acres in the Inman Valley, South of Adelaide with 30 inches of rainfall. My pasture in one paddock is green but drying and about to seed. I rotational graze but the season has been excellent and my stock numbers have not been high enough to eat the extra pasture. Do I leave this paddock which has an abundance of rye, clover and phalaris to die or do I slash it down now before it seeds so some goodness goes back in to what has been a paddock of sorrel, cape weed and other weeds.

Size of tractor and attachments

Hi, I have a 100 acre farm in Mansfield , Victoria which we manage on a part time basis. We have 24 Black Angus steers and 4 Angus cows. Other than than the boundary fence the property has no internal fences, nor does it have a dwelling. Over time we intend to establish seperate paddocks, build another dam, a driveway and eventually a small house. I am toying with the idea of purchasing a tractor, however I'm not sure what size would be suitable and what attachments I would need.
