New to the game

Hi,

I am interested in some advice about potentially buying 1000 acres in the Hunter Valley to graze cattle on. I currently live overseas and will return to Australia over next few years and will build a house on it and live there as a primary residence. We have two young boys who I would love to allow them to grow up in this lifestyle. I have no experience in farming.

Some questions for the group, would you actually consider outsourcing the management of the property in the short term ? The existing owners currently run 100 cattle on the property, how would I work through the carrying capacity ? Can you direct me anywhere to understand this ? Are there any checklists that a prospective owner could look at to understand the questions I should be asking?

Appreciate any help or heads up you may provide?

Todd

Hi Todd its great to see someone keen about farming and it is a great place to raise a family.

But are you kidding my advise dont do it 1000 acres and no experience forget it.You will not make enough out of 100 head to pay someones wages and take care of the property as if its there own.

If you are that keen wait until you are ready to live here and  buy a small holding so you can learn the ropes then buy a bigger place if you and your family still love the idea.

Farm work never stops there is always something to do and to spend your money on and you owe it to your cattle to take proper care of them.Even going away for a week and leaving your stock unattended is a worring time.

Hi Todd I am in the same boat as you but living in Sydney at present Iam looking at 700 acres in the new England area just to farm goats and maybe 20 or 30 steers for a small added bonus I will be selling here in Sydney to do this and basically hoping for the best I have a lot of knowledge on cattle and fencing requirements and will have people living there to keep an eye on the stock while im away working. Don't be put off by doing what your heart tells you to do I've always wanted to buy a farm and farm it.
