Almost Time to Make the Move

With years passing by (faster these days it seems), it is almost time time to make the move from city life to a childhood dream of living in the country. With little in the way of savings and still having a mortgage, the plan is to sell my outer city home and with what is left after paying off the mortgage, find a small holding of around 20 acres and under 100 acres. I want to run a small boutique boarding kennel and would like to run a small number of sheep mostly for herding training of our dogs (they are working breeds). If there is room some, Alpacas. I am looking at staying within NSW I have a couple of questions that I hope those that have been though this, might be able to answer. 1. Is this doable on a shoe-string budget (purchase price of the property

Hi Nev,

Welcome to the small farms forum and thanks for the post.

Anything is possible, if you are on a small budget you might have to sacrifice the land size, quality of house or location. If you are prepared to move further away from the metroplotian cities or larger country towns the price of land reduces. If you are planning on starting the boarding kennel business, ensure you have some money put aside for working capital as any new start up business will require start up funds until you have paying customers.

Regarding farmer's markets, most are very receptive to new stall holders. Some markets don't like too many farmer's selling similar products, they like a good mix of farm produce. There is a farmers market association who you can contact for furtehr information and to search for local farmer markets in the area you are looking to move to
https://farmersmarkets.org.au/find-a-market/

We also have a Facebook discussion group which you may like to join and post the question to, the group is pinned to the top of our Facebook page.

Charlie
