Hi from the Southern Highlands, NSW

Hi, I'm Maria. I've been living in Tasmania for the last 18 years. My husband, Gregorio and I will be "going home" to a family property in the Southern Highlands of NSW in January 2015.

The property is about 100 acres and is mostly cleared. I don't believe much has been done on the farm in the past so it's a bit of a blank canvas.

My father has planted about 200 young olive trees so they are a few years away from giving a cash crop. He also runs a few cows on the property.

Been on the property 8 years. Time to make a start

Hi All,

My family and I have been living on an small (42 acre) farm in beautiful Nungurner, East Gippsland, Victoria for the past 8 years and haven really dont much about it.

We have decided it time to raise some Beef cattle. We are not looking for anything special, just 10-12 beef calves (steers) to raise and sell on every 18 months or so (and keep 1 for the freezer), take a break for 6-8 months (to let the paddocks regenerate) and start again. I am not looking for calves that I have to raise by hand so weiners are prefered.

New migrants thinking about farming life

Hi,
My wife and I are new migrants to Australia. We come from Argentina and although being brought up in the city, we always longed a life in the country.

Looking to make a "tree change"

Hi, my husband and I are looking at packing our 4 boys up and buying some land. We've always wanted acreage but cannot afford it around Brisbane where we currently are. We are seriously considering moving to Northern NSW (around Murwullimbah) in order to achieve the lifestyle we want.

Hi all

Hi,

I have been living the dream for the last 10 or so years on our 25 acres in Southern NSW, we have about 10 dorpers, a couple of alpaccas, two dogs and a couple of kids (the human kind).

We love the lifestyle of growing and eating our produce and would not swap it for anything.

We look forward to browsing this site for new ideas and also to see what other people are doing on their patches.

Our interests are sheep, alpaccas, dogs, fruit trees, the vegie garden, photography and a casual lifestyle.

Cheers,

DarkRanger

Cricket / insect farming

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone had experience with cricket farming in Australia. I believe it is quite cheap to start up as not much land and machinery is needed.

With the rising cost of animal feed, farming crickets or insects for feed might become a viable, healthy and maybe cheap option for animal farmers. Pet shops might want to buy crickets as well.

Are there any regulations on insect farming in Australia?

Are there any viruses that might kill crickets in Australia at the moment?

Do farmers in Australia widely use pesticides?

Cheers

Thinking of moving slightly west

Hi Farmstytle, enjoy your site and decided to join. My wife and I have been talking about moving from our current location and have started looking at rural properties around our area. The criteria we have set is a little vague at the moment as there seems to be quite a range in price and properties on the market at the moment, we are keen at looking at property that will be producing a supplementary income and include all the family for the investment.

Tree farming / miniature cattle

Hi all, I have a small 35ac hobby farm in northern NSW and am looking at planting trees for profit pulowania trees or something simIlar. Does anyone have any advice or that can recommend some other types of trees or using the land for other uses like miniature cattle

I am new to the hobby farming, I grow my own vegies and some fruit trees but also work fulltime. I am looking to cut back on work if I can make some income from the hobby farm.
