Small tractor for 10 acre hobby farm at Nanango

Hi all,

Interested in purchasing a small tractor with slasher and bucket, our block is moderately elevated so I am assuming a 4WD model would be the go.

Also have read some reports about Korean tractors including the Kioti brand and as I have had no experience with tractors I thought a question on this forum would be invaluable.

Kind regards,

Michael.

Hi Michael,

You may want to assess if you really need a tractor. I have over 100 undulating acres and find that I use a 4 wheel drive and trailer mainly. Even things like slashing can be done with a motorised tow along slasher.  I have 35Hp tractor and I have used it for 17 hours in the last 8 months. Not a great return on investment and if I had my time again I would get a cheaper, good condition, well known brand (Kubota, John Deer etc)  used tractor.

If you feel you do need one for things like rotary hoeing, running augers etc then I would get the largest one you can afford. Most people sell thier tractors to get bigger ones not smaller ones.

Just my experience and sure there are contrary arguments as well.

regards

Terry

Michael, I'm with Terry, my poor old girl doesn't get much use at all now that the fencing is done and the sheep are working their magic. I have eight acres and purchased a second hand 50s diesel tractor. She was great for what I needed her for initially, but I could have saved a couple of dollars by hiring what I needed as I needed it. Your situation my be different but as long as you do the maths you can't go wrong. If you decide to get one I wouldn't be considering anything under 35 hp. Cheers

Hi All,

Terry, could you please point me in the right direction for a motorised tow slasher.  I am in a similar boat with my 4WD and trailer and not sure I would get good onging use out of a tractor.

We move into our new place soon and I will be borrowing a tractor to get some ripping etc done for tree planting and to sort the driveway but after that I don't see a huge use for one.  At least in the short term.

Cheers

Tony
