Perfecting Prune Production (11-Apr-10)
View PDF version to print
Consumer demand for pitted prunes has driven the industry to boost fruit size and will be the focus of attention at a prune quality field day at the Griffith Centre for Irrigated Agriculture (GCIA) on Wednesday April 21.
Industry & Investment (I&I) NSW horticulturist and prune industry development manager, Anne Mooney, said producing the perfect prune entailed more than just drying a plum.
“We aim to help growers produce the larger fruit processors and packers need to meet consumer demand and compete with imported prunes,” Ms Mooney said.
“Production methods including soil health, tree nutrition, pruning and irrigation all contribute to the size and quality of the fruit.”
Ms Mooney said field demonstrations of pruning and budding and inspections of new variety trials at the GCIA would attract growers from the major prune growing areas of the Riverina and Young.
A grower forum will discuss issues which arose during the past season, with particular attention to be given to dehydration concerns.
RSVP to Anne Mooney (02) 6391 3873 or anne.mooney@industry.nsw.gov.au by April 16 to attend the prune quality field day. Acknowledgment: Industry and Investment NSW
