Sheep And Farmed Goats To Be Tagged From The 1st January 2009

In 2004, the Primary Industries Ministerial Council (PIMC) introduced a new system for tracing sheep and goats, the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS Sheep & Goats). NLIS (Sheep & Goats) commenced on 1 January 2006, with sheep and goats born after that date required to be tagged before leaving the property of birth. Several States have separate arrangements for identification of dairy goats; contact each state department for details.

From 1 January 2009, all sheep and farmed goats must be ear tagged before they are moved from any property to a saleyard, abattoir or another property. The tag must be printed with the property identification code (PIC) of the property the sheep or goats are moving from. A movement document ('national vendor declaration' or 'transported stock statement') must be fully completed and accompany the animals. If the mob is non-vendor bred or mixed and contains tags with different PICs, all PICs must be written on the movement document.

Each State and Territory is responsible for NLIS (Sheep & Goats) in its jurisdiction, click here for state contacts.

For a summary on how to order tags in each state click here and for accredited tag suppliers click here.
